Whilst researching what UK businesses expect from their UK Internet Marketing service I came across a few key pointers which helped me to perfect our service. It was pretty good before but now it’s grrreat as Tony the Tiger would say! One of the main objections and fears that UK SMEs have is that they don’t actually know what their SEO or Internet Marketing company is doing for them. This causes them to be uneasy about spending money where it needs to be spent and results in mistrust of their SEO service providers. In fact, we’ve had clients who have come to us who have tried 3, 4, 5, even 6 different SEO companies before coming to us. That’s great for us because we get the work but we also want to stop that cycle and, on auditing some of the work that as been done on these sites, it isn’t bad, some was bad but other aspects was good. I honestly think that the odds are that if a client has used 6 SEO companies before us that their work can’t all have been bad. Ok maybe some of them could only take the project so far and then required the real experts, i.e. us, to step in 🙂 But perhaps the main problem with all of these SEO companies was in the communication with the client. Clients usually approach SEO companies with an idea of how much they would like to spend. The client gets some of the work done. Well, everything that they’ve paid for but they were expecting more. Their expectations were unrealistic but the SEO company never bothered to set them straight. A big problem. We spend a lot of our time educating our prospective clients about how much SEO really costs which includes what is really involved if the job is to be done properly. Some of the prospects who we quote will end up going for our cheaper competitors but at least we advised them. But they aren’t really less expensive are they? And they usually end up coming back to us with their tails between their legs, having missed opportunities along the way. Some times we have to decline their business because we’ve already accepted a contract with a local competitor and we have an exclusivity agreement in place. Too bad but we do try to educate our prospective clients from the start, provide them with lengthy strategy analyses before they even have to sign and, basically, prove that we are worth our salt before their project starts so there’s really no need for them to go elsewhere once they’ve spoken to us about their needs.
